A Little Too Modern

Friday March 9th
On Friday, I decided to venture out and go to the Tate Modern Museum. There is also the Tate Britain in London, but the Modern is located in South London on the Thames. For some reason I was under the impression that the Tate Modern…wouldn’t be that Modern…Well, I was mistaken. This place was so out of my league. Some of the work I could try to put together. There was Picasso and Matisse, but some of the other artists were so obscure and abstruse that I couldn’t even wrap my mind around it. One of the exhibits was a ‘live performance.’ It was these art students wearing white button downs with a bowtie. The students sat around the table and would talk about whatever and anyone could walk in and ‘observe’ the ‘living art.’ I just walked around with my mouth wide open and a confused look on my face. I think I’ll just stick to impressionism and surrealism.

LIVING ART?

That night my flat and friends went out to dinner at a restaurant in Covent Gardens. From there, we attempted to go watch a friend play in his concert. My friend made is clear that he was playing a bar called “The Living Room” near Piccadilly. When the Brits heard this, they were super surprised since the Living Room is a classy bar. When we walked in, I not only felt under dressed, but I was super young. This was a young professionals bar and I am neither. The weirdest part is that our friend was nowhere to be found. We asked the manager if a guy on a guitar was playing at all tonight and he said no. We were in disbelief since it came across that our friend was lying to us! Who would lie about a gig? Well, it turns out that there are TWO bars called “The Living Room” in Piccadilly. What?! How does that happen? So basically, he wasn’t lying about his gig….he just played at a different bar. Go figures.

Saturday March 10th
Saturday was an exciting day. The day started with going to Borough Market with my friend Toby. He picked up a sandwich from the market for lunch and I went vegetable shopping in preparation for my big soup night. My mom mailed me matzah ball mix and then e-mailed me the list of ingredients that I will need. In the market I bought: potatoes, carrots, leek, dill, parsnip, and onions.

After the market, I tubbed it over to Green Park to go to an international Haverford alumni meeting. People came and talked about a man named Philip Noel-Baker, a Haverford alum, who basically owned the world He was a Nobel Laureate, served in the House of Commons and Lords, won a silver at the 1926 Olympics, was a founder of the League of Nations, and helped found the soccer team Haverford. Basically, this guy was a baller. There was free sushi and a lot of schmoozing. I felt all adult and everything as I was ‘networking.’

From there, I went home and began the cooking. It took around 40 minutes to finish the soup and I was so proud of myself. It looked and smelled delicious. I made some of my flatmates try it and they loved it. Well they said they liked it, so I’ll take it as a compliment.

At night, we had another mini-Haverford reunion as a whole bunch of us gathered in my room. Some of the girls were visiting from Ireland and came over to my dorm to hang out. We took them to the local hostel pub and showed them a good time.
Sunday March 11th
Tonight we are having a flat dinner with friends. I better cook something good!

Hope your weekend was good and here are some more eggs for ya’ll!
